This is a disucussion on Global Warming, and its apparent affects on our environment, and future generations. How do you feel about Obama's proposed plans, and what are your hopes, fears, and expectations?

Just as polls show the increasing support from US citizens in the fight against global warming, we record one of the coldest winters in the last couple decades. I believe there are strong arguments on both sides of this debate, but one thing I think we should all agree on is that we need to take better care of our environment. One fundamental issue is simply "where is all this waste going"? As we become deeper into the digital age, our consumption and diposal of electionic goods has become overbearing. We take for granted that we dont walk outside and see old TV and VCR machines laying all over our front lawn. The fact is, all this eWaste is being shipped and dumped illegally to in 3rd world countries. This contains huge mercury deposits and is killing off small village people in the thousands. This is a exponentially growing problem that needs attention now.

Obama's very first act as President, before he even took office in January, was to have the solar panels on the roof of the White house, that Regan had removed, re-installed. The first two executive orders that Obama signed as President involved carbon emissions, in an act he called a "downpayment" towards a greener economy. The first tightens fuel efficiency standards, and the second allows states to move faster than the feds. This man is truly dedicated to solving the problem. Critics say that his solutions are equivalent to putting a band-aid on an arterial hemorrhage, but he has to start somewhere. And it's easier to convince his opponents and not burn bridges if he can achieve success and use that to build momentum.

Unfortunately, many people think that a colder than normal winter means that global warming isn't a real phenomenon. Historically, when the plant has gone through periods of meteorological upheaval and change, unusually hotter than normal summers and colder than normal winters are part of the equation -- witness the "little ice age" that northern Europe experienced in the 1500s.
While it remains to be seen how extensive the weather will change and it is unknown how much of global warming is due to natural phenomenon and how much is due to human influences like green house gasses and poor energy usage, it can't be a bad thing to focus our attention on lowering fossil fuel consumption or improving our usage of natural resource usage.

Global Warming is a hoax to get people interested in "saving the world" through increased taxes and eco-slavery.

@ Jennifer It was GEORGE W BUSH who had the solar panels installed in 2002/2003. See www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/solarwhitehouse.htm Also note that "before he even took office" he could NOT act as President.

In Michigan the dumping ground hurt our waters' and soil. The coldest winter since 1920 here should be a clue to someone out the that there needs to be a shift in energy sources. We should use the coal we have and have big business make it safe. They did this now they should pay the price. We also need to continue to research the new fuels and get reasonable cost effective solutions that will help our planet. We are in trouble and we should not ignore it for the consequences are too great for further generations.

Our nation has become used to abundance and our children have grown up without an appreciation for conservation of water, air, pollution and other natural resources. Wise use of a countries resources is one of the best things that we as a nation can do. Whether global warming is real or fiction is immaterial in the sense that by perserving our natural resources we are protecting our environment -- and, it is the smart thing to do for now and for future generations.
